My Sweet,
I finally caved and this weekend we got an elf.
This is big.
This Elf symbolises that I have turned a corner. I have healed enough that I can now handle the duties of an Elf on the Shelf and I’m looking forward to coming up with stupid things for him to do!
You may laugh … OR you may be feeling the full overwhelm of the season and totally get what I’m talking about (see the above Guided Meditation, this is for you!).
Since going through divorce, I’ve not been able to even consider an Elf on the Shelf. In previous years, I was so in trauma and stressed out about Christmas, trying to make it perfect. Always overwhelmed and like I wasn’t doing enough, getting enough, swimming furiously and barely keeping my face above water.
I’d crawl over the finish line at New Year, hoping next year would be the one where it gets easier.
An Elf would have pushed me over the edge.
Compassion
If this is you, I point you to an interaction I had with my mum that went viral on TikTok. I ALWAYS return to this when I feel my not-enough-ness creeping in.
I think the reason I’m finally feeling better is…
Compassion - my word for 2024 was ‘compassion’ so I have been actively trying to be more compassionate towards myself (and others). To acknowledge what I’ve been through and that I’m doing my best.
We are inherently unkind to ourselves. Often beating ourselves up when we’re at our lowest. This year I have allowed myself to rest when I feel sad or anxious or overwhelmed or not good enough.
It’s been the most generous thing I could do for myself and it’s paid off.
I finally feel really, really Christmassy (hence the jammies - Sainbury’s clothing is delivering this year!!), safe to just enjoy it. To do my best and give myself a break if it’s not perfect… Because I know I can breathe through any discomfort as it comes up 🫶
If you’re feeling the pull of overwhelm and perfectionism, I’d love to invite you to the guided meditation I’m holding tonight (Monday 2nd Dec) at 7pm. It’s designed to calm the nervous system and help you connect back to what you really want this holiday season.
